Day 2 of our vacation

Posted by Lisa on February 6th, 2006 — Posted in Uncategorized

This morning, after a good night sleep. my mom and I (and Leyna of course) went hiking while my dad stayed home tinkering on the internet and Steve went to work. After we got home, we got ready and went to lunch downtown. We went to a quaint little outdoor restaurant-Beethoven’s. We had sandwiches, ensalada chilena and papas duquesaa (which are similar to fried mashed potato balls). We then went to La Recova, which is the local artesian shops where they have indoor and outdoor stands. Outside was a team of local musicians playing drums and dancing. We then went across the street and I finally bought Steve’s christmas present- 2 sea fishing rods and supplies. I was surprised at how well I was able to communicate with the salesman who knew no english, and I knew nothing about fishing and fishing terms. I wanted to find out where I can buy bait so I asked Donde puedo comprar comida para los pescados- I think roughly translated means where can I buy food for the fish? Which he understood and said to go to Coquimbo. He also told us a good place to go fishing. We then came home, had the dip that I made for the super bowl, and my dad and I played some ping pong. He beat me 2 games to 1. Currently he and Steve are playing, and I think the score is 1 to 1. My mom is busy trying to finish up The Good Earth for our book club Wednesday night. Tonight, we’re having steak on the barbie and I think we’ll play some games afterwards. I love having my parents here!!!!!

They’re here!!!

Posted by Lisa on February 6th, 2006 — Posted in Uncategorized

My parents arrived here safe and sound yesterday. I’m so excited they are here. They will be spending the next 3 weeks with us. We had a wonderful first day. After eating a quick bite at home and meeting the pup (who they LOVE!), we went off to the beach for their first pisco sours. We sat outside a restaurant relaxed, chatted, drank and people watched. Afterwards, we drove to Coquimbo and went to the fort at the tip of the island that has been made into a cafe. We sat outside watched the birds, sea lions and boats, and drank some Cabernet Sauvignon from the Limari Valley. It was a beautiful day, in the 70’s and sunny, and everyone got some color. We then went grocery shopping, came home took naps, did Christmas in February (I got a great exercise outfit, some non parels from Munsons, a yankee hat, a magazine subscription, some clothes, some more of my polish pottery for my collection and this neat light up turning thingy with a piece of carved glass that spins) barbecued, drank more wine, watched the game and went to bed. Today, I’m waiting for the lazy bums to get up, then my mom and I are going to go hiking with Leyna, then I think we’re going to plan out the next 3 weeks and probably go out for lunch. I’ll keep you updated!

Driving around the hills of Coquimbo we came across a funeral procession on foot, pulling the casket along with the mourners following behind, sad but beautiful…

It’s Grillin’ Time!!

Posted by Lisa on January 17th, 2006 — Posted in Uncategorized

Yesterday Steve and I finally bought a grill! We were planning on using it last night, but after 2 hrs of assembly, Steve was done with the grill for the night, so we postponed it to now!! Steve is busy grilling our chori’s which is a chilean sausage. It’s the food of choice at all the barbecues and happy hours. We even found this awesome choripan board for them (choripan is the chori in a roll). Can’t wait for all of you to come visit, and we’ll grill you up some chori’s!!!

Empanadas de Horno

Posted by Lisa on December 5th, 2005 — Posted in Uncategorized

On Sunday, Steve and I made yummy empanadas for lunch. Instead of the normal pino filling, Steve and I made pizza ones, and then deep fried them. They were wonderful. I thought I would give you a traditional empanada recipe, these are baked, hence de horno…

4 c. all purpose flour
1T. baking powder
salt
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 c. warm milk
1c. shortening, melted

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the beaten eggs, the milk and the melted lard. Mix; divide into 20 pieces. Roll each piece into a circle (so it’s flat). Put a spoonful of the cold stuffing on half the circle and fold over. Wet the edge with milk, fold over again. Bake in hot oven at 400 until brown and cooked.
*We can just buy empanada wrappers at the store, but I may try making them from scratch, sounds easy enough.

Pino Filling

2T. oil
1 t. paprika
4 onions finely sliced
1/2 t chili powder
1/2 t. cumin
1/2 t. oregano
salt
1 lb ground meat
3 hard boiled eggs sliced
20 black olives
40 large raisins

Heat the oil with paprika. Fry the onions until soft. Add the chili powder, oregano, cumin and salt. Add the beef and mix with onions. Cook until tender. Let sit overnight in fridge.
Fill the empanadas and add slices of egg, raisins and olives, divided between the 20 empanadas.
If you like them shiny, paint with a glaze made of 1 egg beaten with 2 T. milk before putting them in the oven.

In traditional Chilean homes empanadas are eaten every Sunday after mass with a glass of red wine. You can fill with whatever you like. It’s fun to experiment!!

More Leyna Fun…

Posted by Lisa on November 26th, 2005 — Posted in Uncategorized

Things are going well with Leyna. We brought her to the vet this week, and she has gained 2 kg- my little gordita!!! Other than that, we’re just dealing with the normal puppy things- biting, housebreaking, and obedience. Having a puppy really lets me know, that I’m not ready for a baby yet because, 1. I have gotten really, really mad at her when she was biting and scratching and making me bleed, and yes, little horns popped out of my head, and a vein was pulsating (can’t do that with a baby), and 2. we brought her to the park today and were running around, and I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to put her on a swing. So I held her and we started swinging, and she got squirmy, and oops, I dropped her. Now she squeaks when you try to pick her up, like she’s afraid of falling. Thankfully, we’ve been picking her up all night, and she’s now getting better, no worries. But I really couldn’t drop a baby on the ground. So all in all, I am perfectly content with my little puppy and will leave the child raising to all my friends.

Weekend Update

Posted by Lisa on November 14th, 2005 — Posted in Uncategorized

Our weekend started off with a wine tasting party on Friday co-hosted by yours truly. We had it at my friend Del’s casa and we enjoyed many good chilean wines. Leyna even came at the end of the party to meet everyone, On Saturday we hung out around the house and cleaned and unpacked some boxes. On Sunday we took Leyna to the beach for the first time. It was fun, though I wish the weather had been better. Poor puppy got car sick as well, but I think she had fun running around the beach. Steve helped me make this little movie to share with you starring Leyna. It’s titled, Leyna’s First Day at the Beach (duh…)

¿Como mi nombre?

Posted by Lisa on November 9th, 2005 — Posted in Uncategorized

Help me!!! I’m a cute puppy without a name. My mom likes Pepita- spanish for nugget, and my dad likes Leyna, old german for little angel, which sounds the same as the spanish Leña which means firewood. I think they need more ideas…

It’s a Girl!!!!!

Posted by Lisa on November 8th, 2005 — Posted in Uncategorized

Steve and I got a sweet little puppy today. She’s a german shepherd puppy, 9 weeks old. She doesn’t have a name yet, her name was Paloma, which is dove in spanish. Unfortunately, my friend Joanna is on vacation right now, so I don’t have a camera, but I took a few pictures with Steve’s video camera. Not a great pictures, but once Steve comes home, we’ll take some more. She is so cute, and has a great personality, and is sleeping next to me as a type. So, here she is, more pictures to come!!!
