Stop 5- Bloomington, Indiana

Posted by Lisa on November 30th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

We tried to make hotel arrangements for Bloomington for the 5 days we were there, but unfortunately (or luckily for us) we weren’t able to get a hotel room for our first night, so we got to stay with Heidi. Who by the way has a great apartment and is a great hostess. We went to Macri’s for the ever popular mozzarella sticks and then back to her place for games and fun. We were so happy we got to hang out with all our friends. We went to Nick’s for some sink the Biz with Heidi, Nick and April, we also went out to dinner with everyone to yummy Mexican and hung out at Nick and April’s apartment. It was so great getting to see them, we only with we could’ve gotten up North to see Adam, Melissa and the bug. Hopefully next time we come rolling though we can get to see them. I also got to hang out with all my friends from work. We got to go to Brown County with our friends Lori and Bob, we went to Gnawbone, for the best pork tenderloin sandwiches in the world. We also went to some painters house, I can’t remember who, Lori do you know? Anyways, we had a great time seeing them again. I ended up going to work each night to see everyone. I do miss nursing, but it was wonderful being back a the hospital with all my friends. It was like I never left. Hopefully it will be that easy to transition back into working when I get back to the states. Steve was also able to do some work at IU, which was our reason for gong to Bloomington. I can’t wait to go back! The great thing about this 3 month trip was in the end, it made me realize how important everyone is to me, I had so much fun seeing everyone, and I miss all my friends terribly. So, my door is always open to anyone who wants to come visit!!!!

Stop 4- Tennessee

Posted by Lisa on November 30th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

Next on our trip, we went to TN for a week. New things going on with the Margheim’s include- Terry retiring, Mary Jane starting a new job in Atlanta, and selling the house and moving to Georgia. Luckily for us, Mary Jane was able to get the week off and come home to TN. They actually ended up moving to Atlanta a week or 2 after we visited. We had a great time in TN, and I got to celebrate my birthday with Mary Jane and Terry (and Steve of course). Mary Jane and I had a wonderful spa day- full pampering. We also went to a corn maze and out to chinese for dinner. Then home, where we had birthday cake made by Steve. It was a great birthday and a great week!! I can’t wait to go Atlanta and visit!!

What can I say about spending a week with great friends at the beach- fishing, eating, drinking and hanging out. Nothing compares. We had a great week in Nags Head, got tan, relaxed, and got to reconnect with all of our friends. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we see them again!!!

Stop 2- Portugal

Posted by Lisa on November 27th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

Lucky for me, Steve had a conference in Portugal, and I got to go too. We had a great time. Portugal is beautiful- cobbled streets and beautiful colored tiled houses. We have so many great memories from our time here. We went to Lisbon for about 2 days and Aviero for 5 days. Aviero is this beautiful town about 3 hours by train away from Lisbon. It has manmade waterways throughout the town. I was able to explore it while Steve was at his conference. The conference took everyone on a day trip by boat through the canals and into the sound to an island for a traditional Portuguese barbecue and the beach. We were able to meet everyone else at the conference and just relax. I can go on for ever about what we did, but I’m sure you would rather see some pics!

Stop 1- London

Posted by Lisa on November 26th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

On our way to Steve’s conference in Portugal, we were able to stop in London for 2 nights and 2 days. We had a fabulous time exploring the city in those 2 days. We stayed right near Paddington Station in this great little funky arty hotel The Pavilion and were able to take the underground everywhere. We saw the London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s, The Tower of London and much more. We were able to meet up with our friend Danielle who was finishing up her master’s in London and went out for a pint. Steve and I also went out for the BEST indian food that we have ever had. It was delicious. Also, we went to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s performance of The Canterbury Tales, which was tremendous. So good, that I now want to reread the book!! We can’t wait to go back and spend more time in London (and more money!). Here are some pics…

The town of Jachal

Posted by Lisa on April 9th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

The town of Jachal is 45 km away from Pismanta. We had to go there on Monday to buy a new tire before driving back Tuesday to Chile. There was a wonderful man there who helped us. He owned his own used tire shop, but unfortunately didn’t have the tire we needed. So he went to the local used tire shops, didn’t find one there so he ended up finding us a new tire, and then drove Steve and I in his car to go pick it up. It was definitely an experience. There were no road signs or stop lights in town and he would just honk his horn when he was close to an intersection. There was no right of way, but surprisingly it worked. In the end for all his help he only charged us 5 pesos (which isn’t even $2). He basically spent half of his day helping us. Even though it was somewhat of a headache to go through, I’m really happy that we did. We got to see a part of Argentina that we would never have seen, and we got to meet some truly wonderful people.

Days 14-17

Posted by Lisa on April 9th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

We decided to drive over the pass onto Argentina for a few days and to stay in Argentina at a thermal spa- Termas Pizmanta. We had a wonderful time even with a flat tire. The pass is Paseo Agua Negra and it’s at about 16,000 feet. The colors going over the Andes were amazing- the mountains were green, orange, purple, yellow. It looked like someone had spilt paint over the mountains. Also towards the top were ice fields and glaciers. We did get a blow out while we were driving down from the pass but in the end, it was a perfect vacation. We stayed a day longer so we could buy a new spare tire. There’s so much to to tell you about, i’ll let the pictures do the talking. These pictures were taken while driving over the pass (on the way to Argentina and back to Chile).
Enjoy!!!!!

Days 9-12

Posted by Lisa on February 17th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

Steve was able to take a few days off from work, so we all decided to head down to Santiago via a 6 hour bus trip. All in all the bus ride was nice though it had no air conditioning. We stayed in a wonderful hotel in Las Condes (a section of Santiago) and had a great time exploring our capitol city. We went on a bus tour, took a ride in a cable car, a funicular, a subway and numerous taxis. We had wonderful food, wine and overall great company. My stories are too numerous to tell, so I will just show some pics.

Hotel Montebianco- We recommend it to everyone, great hotel and service!!

Centro Artesaneal “Los Dominicos”-
Shopping of all sorts selling local and national crafts line the winding passageways of this market. It felt like we were shopping for hours. Steve and I had thought we lost our parents but didn’t realize that there was a way back section. We all spent our life savings here, I think.

Valentines Day dinner-
Steve and I were unable to get reservations at the Thai restaurant and the hotel tried to get us reservations somewhere else, but everything was booked including the restaurant that my parents went to, so can you guess where we ended up?

Palacio La Moneda y Centro Cultural-
Underneath the presidential palace where the president works not lives, is a new cultural center with touring exhibits. Lucky for us the Mexico exhibit was here, which Steve is very into and we were able to go. One of the best pieces was an Olmac head. We were not allowed to take any pictures in the exhibits unfortunately.

El Molle

Posted by Lisa on January 28th, 2006 — Posted in Travel

On Tuesday I went to El Molle with some friends. El Molle is about 20 min away in the Valley Elqui. It’s a tiny little town with a church, a couple hotels and a wonderful restaurant, which is where we were headed. We went to Los Hornitos del Molle for parrilla- which is a bunch of grilled meat served to the table in a clay oven type thing with hot coals in it. It was wonderful. We sat outside in the gardens that surround the pool that you can use after eating for an additional 1000 pesos. We opted not to go swimming, but had great food and wine. Afterwards we went on a walk around town and stopped at this little building that was having an art show. They had these beautiful diaguita influenced paintings done by a local artist from La Serena. My parents are coming next Sunday, and I think I’ll take them here for some great chilean barbecue!
